Music
At Monkwick Infant School, our aim is for all of our children to develop a love of music. All children follow the Charanga Music curriculum, where they learn to listen to and appraise different musical genres, exploring composition and improvisation, as well as singing and performing.
The children will learn how to play the glockenspiel and other percussion instruments from nursery, building up to playing a simple song in year 2.
Our threshold concepts within the music curriculum allow the children to revisit their knowledge and gradually build upon it, resulting in a greater depth of understanding.
Every child actively takes part in performances over the year by sharing their skills with another class, the whole school, or the wider school community.
We regularly enjoy musical experiences from outside agencies such as African drumming workshops and Rocksteady Music School to enrich our cultural capital. Alongside regular singing within the class, our school also provides a weekly school choir where the children learn how to prepare to sing, including looking at singing posture, breathing and vocal warm-ups to sing along with others.
