Enrichement at Monkwick Infant and Nursery School

At the heart of the school lies a commitment to knowing our community and championing its children.

At Monkwick Infant and Nursery school we recognise that a truly impactful education starts with a deep understanding of our community and its unique needs. This insight allows us to design a bespoke enrichment offer that provides meaningful opportunities, designed to spark curiosity and inspire our children to aim high.

We are dedicated to removing barriers and offering experiences that may previously have seemed out of reach. By truly valuing our children and their individual journeys, we ensure that our curriculum is not static, but evolves alongside the world around us.

Through establishing and maintaining an up-to-date understanding of what is required to thrive in modern society, we provide the tools necessary for a secure and successful future for all. We don’t just prepare children for the next stage of their education; we prepare them for life.

Key Enrichment Objectives

To bring our mission to life, we focus on four strategic pillars that ensure our enrichment offer remains relevant, inclusive, and ambitious:

  • Community-Led Design: To regularly engage with families and local partners, ensuring our enrichment activities directly address the specific needs and context of our community.

  • Broadening Horizons: To provide a guaranteed "Experience Promise" for every year group, introducing children to cultural, sporting, and creative opportunities that might otherwise feel out of reach.

  • Raising Aspirations: To invite diverse role models and professionals into school, inspiring our children to aim high and see themselves as the leaders, creators, and thinkers of tomorrow.

  • Future-Proofing Success: To continuously review and update our resources and technology, establishing a secure foundation that equips pupils with the digital literacy and adaptability needed for a successful future.

A Journey of Discovery

During their time at our school, we ensure every child’s journey is filled with vibrant experiences that spark joy and build character. Our carefully curated programme of activities is designed to build confidence, foster creativity, and instil a sense of belonging within our community.

From the start of Reception through the conclusion of Year 2, our curriculum is enriched by a diverse range of experiential learning opportunities. By integrating community engagement—such as visits from emergency services and our collaborative Reading Cafés—we foster a vibrant learning environment that prioritises both academic celebration and civic awareness.

Sports & Physical Wellbeing

At our school, we champion the power of movement. Pupils have access to a diverse range of extracurricular clubs—including football, gymnastics, multi-skills, and yoga—designed to foster coordination, physical literacy, and teamwork. Our annual Sports Week serves as a highlight of the school year, celebrating collective effort and individual achievement. This commitment to physical development begins early; in Year 1, children participate in a specialised Scooter Education program, equipping them with the essential skills to ride confidently and safely.

Character & Charity

To help our pupils understand their place in the world, we engage in meaningful charitable experiences. Whether it’s supporting our local food bank, participating in charity raising days, or choosing a local charity to support through sponsored events, our children learn the value of empathy and helping others.

Our children actively engage in a variety of charity events, including Children in Need, Number Day, and World Book Day, fostering a sense of social responsibility from a young age. We believe in providing our children with a strong voice; through our Eco-Team and School Council, they learn to work collaboratively and make meaningful decisions. This includes participating in the democratic process by voting for their peers to represent them.

Beyond the school gates, our children come together to support the local area through the Monkwick Marvels initiative. This community-focused program empowers our children to take pride in their surroundings and make a positive impact on the world around them.  We also participate in the Colchester in Bloom initiative, engaging in gardening throughout the year.

Our Character Curriculum

In addition to the National Curriculum, we deliver a dedicated Character Curriculum utilising resources from ACE,  designed to instill essential traits in every child. This framework provides our children with the foundational qualities needed to lead successful, purposeful lives.

Alongside these character traits,  in KS1 we integrate Skills Builder principles to equip children with the practical tools they need for the future. We are committed to raising aspirations by challenging stereotypes and removing the assumption that certain careers are only accessible to specific individuals. Our goal is to empower every child to believe that any career path is within their reach.
