History

Our children will become historians by understanding these ‘Threshold concepts’ in KS1:

Investigating and interpreting the past

Children will use artefacts and evidence that have been selected for them to investigate. They will handle real objects and look at evidence such as photos, maps, and pictures that will help them understand what life was like in the past. They will understand that learning about the past is an interpretation of the available evidence.

Build an overview of world history concepts

Children will gain knowledge about other historical events and develop an awareness of how different social classes lived through gaining knowledge about locations, society, travel, conflict, culture, and pastimes.

Understanding Chronology

Children will get an understanding of individuals and locations throughout history by learning about dates in time and seeing them on a timeline that will be displayed in classrooms. Children will discover that certain historical events occurred in similar locations and on similar dates. A timeline chart and birthday display for our reception children will mark the passage of time.

Communicate Historically

As a school, we have taken great effort in choosing words that will assist the children in becoming historians. For our children’s knowledge and schema to become more complex, vocabulary is essential. To help students communicate historically, we have developed a vocabulary bank to be used in history lessons.

Curriculum Study at Monkwick Infant and Nursery School

In Nursery

Children will begin to make sense of their own lives and their families' histories. They will spend time with children talking about photos and memories. Children will be encouraged to retell what their parents told them about their life story and family.

In Reception

Understanding the World ELG: Children at the expected level of development will:

  • Talk about the lives of the people around them and their roles in society.

  • Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class;

  • Understand the past through settings, characters, and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.

In KS1

Children will know:

  • about the lives of significant individuals in Britain’s past who have contributed to our nation’s achievements.
