Governors at Monkwick Infant School & Nursery and Monkwick Junior School.
Since July 2017, the governing bodies across both schools have been working together - it is the first time Monkwick Infant School & Nursery and Monkwick Junior School have had one team guiding and overseeing operations. Both schools can now work more closely together and support our families through the transition and provide continuity.
The governors of the school work to ensure that the school is functioning well, that the staff members are motivated and working for the well-being of the pupils and that the children are happy, settled and achieving their educational goals.
The full governing body meets termly but the body is divided into two main committees which meet more frequently:
Resources (which includes finance) and Standards (looking at pupil progress)
The full governing body consists of:
Sandra Tate – Chair of Governors
I am proud to be the Chair of Governors for both Monkwick Infants and Monkwick Junior Schools and to be working with the dedicated leadership and staff of two such vibrant schools. My previous experience is education based.
I have been the Assistant Vice Principal at Clacton Coastal Academy since the inception of the Academy and with the predecessor schools for 16 years. I have worked in the Tendring and Colchester area since 1986. I am passionate about the nurturing of students to attain beyond their best. My role at CCA follows this passion in that I am responsible for ensuring that our students are safe within the academy and that where issues occur they are dealt with quickly and sensitively. I am the lead at the academy for curriculum design and timetable and I am fully committed to the inclusion of all students. Working within a multi academy trust I am familiar with how these run and am looking forwards to working with Claire and Rebecca and their team of committed staff during this exciting development with the Sigma Trust.
Claire Holmes – Headteacher Monkwick Infant School
Rebecca McCutcheon - Headteacher Monkwick Junior School
Gavin Bradley - Executive Head Teacher Monkwick Junior School
Pip Gallop - Vice Chair of Governors
I started my teaching career at Monkwick Infant School as an NQT in 1987 and remained at the school until 2015. I took on many roles alongside being a class teacher and finally took on the position of Deputy Head and SENCO. I am a firm believer in equal access to education for all children and the Sigma Trust’s belief that that achievement is for all and that no child should be left behind.
Since retiring I have continued to be involved at Monkwick Infant School as governor and now am delighted to be a part of the combined governing body with Monkwick Junior School as working in partnership can only be good for all aspects of the children’s education. My main responsibility as governor is for Curriculum which includes that for Special Educational Needs.
I keep up to date with current developments in education through my work with trainee teachers and regular visits to the Monkwick Schools.
Gemma Singleton - Vice Chair of Governors
I have worked in an Educational setting for 7 years, the last 2 years as a Senior Leader and School Business Manager, in an Essex Primary School. As a School Business Manager I am responsible for Finance, HR, Premises, Catering and any other business related matter involved in running a school. As a Senior Leader I am involved in the safeguarding and wellbeing of children and play a part in the strategic planning and management of the school. All of the skills and knowledge required for me to fulfil these roles help me fulfil my role as a School Governor.
I have a vested interest in both Monkwick Infant School and Monkwick Junior School as I have children in Year 1 and Year 4. Having attended both schools myself and living within the community all my life I enjoy being able to give something back in this important voluntary role.
Carol Carlsson Browne
I qualified as a solicitor in 1982 and practised for almost 12 years, when I retrained as a teacher. I taught in a number of schools in North Essex, worked as a literacy consultant for Essex County Council and retired three years ago after six years as a head teacher in Clacton.
I retain a keen interest in education. Since I retired, I have completed an MA in Children’s Literature and I am involved with initial teacher training with North Essex Teaching Training (NETT)
I was a school governor from 1990 – 1998 and again from 2008 onwards. I am currently a trustee of two Multi-Academy Trusts. I have undertaken much training, including more recently the Certificate in School Governance Studies, Safer Recruitment in Education, Level 3 Safeguarding and Leading Governance.
I believe wholeheartedly in the state-funded school system from which my children benefitted, and now my grandchildren. I want all children to have the best possible education, while at the same time acknowledging that schools play an important role in children’s health and wellbeing.
Jacqueline Doran - Parent Governor
My name is Jacqueline Doran, many of you at the school gates know me as 'Jaks'.
I am a La Leche League Leader, part-time civil Servant and Mum of two school age children who have each attended the Monkwick schools.
In my professional life, I am a HR Manager within a school and this is the area of expertise I bring to the Local Governing Board. I live with my husband and daughter, of primary school age, very close to the Monkwick community. I am passionate about the vision and values of The Sigma Trust, which the Monkwick schools belongs to, and believe that every child should be able to access an education that builds the skills necessary for them to face the future with confidence. I am delighted to have the opportunity to take up a Governing Board role, to positively impact the education of all children who attend the Monkwick schools.
Sue Madell - Clerk to Governors
