Spring Term 2019
This half term year 2’s topic is Jim and the Beanstalk and animals and habitats.
Jim and the Beanstalk.
We started this term off by having a planting day at school. The children have decided to generate the outside area just by the year 2 classrooms which were looking very unloved and uncared for.
As part of PSHE work this term, the children are learning about what it takes to look after our environment. This will be an ongoing project taking us into the summer term.
The children enjoyed weeding and preparing the grounds ready to plant when the weather gets better. Parents donated tubs, seeds and gardening equipment which we were very pleased to receive.
We were also very lucky to have two visitors who came in to inspire the children about growing and planting.
Our first visitor was Mr Hughes who runs his own landscape gardening business. He spoke to the children about how to run a business and showed the children his van and equipment. The children were able to practice asking questions and were very keen to learn about how to use some of the gardening tools.
The children were asked to design a garden for the giant which they will eventually make using junk modelling. Mr Hughes advised the children about the designs and will be coming back to judge the best one.
Our next visitor was from a company called Orchard World.
Alan is a buyer of apples for the company and he spoke to the children about how apples trees grow. He shared his knowledge on growth conditions and talked through the life cycle of an apple tree.
He very kindly brought in three Gala apples trees for the school to grow and also crates of gala apples for the children to taste. We decided to use the apples and make apple crumble which was very nice indeed!!
In science the children are learning to be scientists. They have worked scientifically on their own investigation into growth. The children have planted cress seeds and placed them in different places to grow. Over the term they will be collecting data to see which growth condition is the best.
We have booked to take the children to a local farm to investigate farmland habitats after the February half term which will be exciting. The children will get to feed some farm animals and learn about their habitats.
In PE this half term the children are learning skills in football and basketball, please ensure that your child has the correct school uniform in school. Earrings are not allowed to be worn and long hair must be tied up.
PE days for year 2 are:
Wednesday and Thursday.
We look forward to sharing your child’s successes during the term.
The year 2 team, Mrs Cumming, Mrs Pennell, Mrs Garnham, Miss Hughes and Miss Rolfe.
